Metal-On-Metal Hip Replacements Remain A Threat Despite Recall

March 17, 2011 /Medical Products PR News/ -- In August 2010, DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. recalled the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. These hip replacement systems consist of a metal ball and socket; when the metal components rub together, the friction can cause small metal particles to separate from the implant. These particles can then be deposited in the hip joint and surrounding tissue, leading to toxic levels of chromium and cobalt in the bloodstream.
These defects can result in a variety of problems. Heavy metal poisoning from exposure to these toxic chemicals can result in visual impairment, cognitive impairment, hearing loss, cardiomyopathy, peripheral neuropathy, hypothyroidism, and rashes.
Some who have encountered problems with these devices have developed pain, swelling and severe inflammation in the hip region, causing difficulty with walking. About 3 in 10 patients receiving one of these hip replacements is required to undergo a second hip replacement surgery within five years. This is a much higher failure rate than the accepted standards among such products.
Although the recall will help to prevent future patients from these problems, many who will be affected by this recall remain unaware of the issue. Some of those who will ultimately be required to have surgery to replace the implant have not yet noticed any problems. Others may have noticed problems, but remain unaware that a defective hip implant is causing them.
Hip replacement surgery is no minor endeavor. When it is required because a company chose to ignore problems, that company should be held accountable for its actions. If you or someone you love has been harmed because of a defective hip implant, you do not have to face these consequences alone. Speak with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can explain your potential product liability claims.
