Prescription Drug Addiction More Deadly than Illegal Drugs
Novus Detox Director Warns that Alternative to Detoxification - Doing Nothing - Can Be Fatal
/Medical Products PR News/ - Pasco County, FL, September 20, 2008 - Novus Medical Detox Facility of Pasco County, Florida (http://www.novusdetox.com) Director Steven L. Hayes reacted to a recent report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration showing prescription drug abuse increasing while illegal drug use dropped, saying "Prescription drug addition and abuse is far deadlier than the use of illegal drugs. This report is bad news for the loved ones of those who experiment with these pharmaceutical substances and then find themselves trapped."
Mr. Hayes bases his statement on the results of 168,900 Florida autopsies done in 2007 and analyzed by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission. They concluded that prescription drugs have replaced "street" drugs like cocaine and heroin as the leading cause of drug abuse deaths in Florida.
These researchers found that the rate of deaths caused by prescription drugs was three times the rate of deaths caused by all illicit drugs combined. Some of the findings from that report include:
• Cocaine, heroin and all methamphetamines caused 989 deaths.
• Legal opioids like Oxycontin caused 2,328 fatalities.
• Drugs containing benzodiazepines, such as Valium, were implicated in 743 deaths.
Hayes concluded "While I applaud the drop in cocaine and methamphetamine use, the reported 4.6 rise in abuse of legal opiods like Oxycontin is a cause for great concern. Medical drug detox is often the only way to reverse the downward addictive cycle. The fatality statistics above should serve as a wake up call to anyone who has a problem with prescription drugs but has put off solving it."
While many medical detox programs take place in a hospital, Novus Medical Detox Center specializes in handling drug dependencies in a private setting that is stress-free, comfortable and safe.
